Under the paving stones, your land - Flaminia Paddeau
Will urban agriculture transform cities? Growing since the beginning of the 21st century, this practice is experiencing a resurgence of interest, reflecting growing awareness of the ravages of conventional agriculture and urbanization. This is especially true as the Covid-19 pandemic has called into question the urban lifestyle, which is based on social inequality in access to nature, land degradation, and a significant dependence on agricultural imports.
In the wastelands of working-class neighborhoods, the shared gardens of city centers, and struggling vegetable gardens, urban agriculture thus allows us to produce, resist, and live differently. Based on a long-term investigation in Greater Paris, New York, and Detroit, this book focuses on the collective efforts of associations and individuals to reclaim and cultivate land in metropolises. Through the stories collected and the plots surveyed, it restores the plurality of spaces and socio-ecological practices, and reports on the alliances and conflicts that are formed around the return of agriculture to the ruins of urban capitalism.
