Commitment grows where it is sown
Commitment grows where it is sown
In the spring of 2017, residents of Rosemont – La Petite-Patrie, in Montreal, decided to reclaim the vacant lot located at the end of their green alleyway to create a permaculture garden and meeting space. Sharing horticultural know-how, making accessories from recycled materials, organizing sociocultural events, managing relations with the neighborhood… Over time, Carré Casgrain became a true community! For the members of the collective, it was also an opportunity to experiment with horizontal functioning, centered on autonomy and collaboration. They even came to play – without having sought it! – the role of neighborhood representatives with local institutions, notably in the matter of the Société de transport de Montréal garage on Bellechasse Street.
Three social science researchers retrace the adventure of Carré Casgrain and the trajectory of its members, through the testimonies of Hélène, Alex, Hélia, Claude, Camille, Adeline, Charlotte, and the two Fabien. They reflect on the motivations that drive citizens to get involved in greening projects and the new forms of political engagement they inspire. Magnificently illustrated by Emanuelle Dufour, this story, imbued with conviviality, could well inspire other citizen initiatives!
